For Lee Krasner, 2022

For Lee Krasner, 2022 125 x 161 cm, 97 x 125 cm

At first I wanted to call this work ,for Jackson Pollock' because the luminous scratches in the dark background remind me of and his enthusiastic drip-paintings that I have so often indulged in.
However I was reading the book Ninth Street Women by Mary Gabriel about five artists after the second world war: Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan and Joan Mitchell. It was amazing, and reminded me of how change is made by people who know who they are. I started to delve more into the life and work of Pollocks wife Lee Krasner and my admiration for her and her work grew with each page. What a powerful artist! What all she went through in dedication of new art. She sacrificed her work and career to promote the artist J. Pollock. She saw in Pollock something that was so alive, so new. She used her strength as a painter to rise above her personal trauma's and put them on canvas.
On reflection I would rather pay tribute this work with chrysanthemums and potatoes to Lee Krasner. To honour her courage and vision
