Philomela

1999, 125 x 125 cm

My mantra is – You choose for love and Eros – as fecund women and artists we create new life. And of course, any family’s domestic dramas mirror ancient tales of jealousy and bloodshed.  This work made in 1999 is called Philomela.

As an artist, you want to mirror the chaotic orderless world and life. Thus, on a mirror in 1999, the first major floral still life was created.   It was an erupting bloody birth. I called the work Gaia.

That year I also created Demeter and Philomela. To my delight, these works were immediately acquired by the Noordbrabants Museum and shown at the exhibition Flowers of the New Age : Dutch flower painting 1980-2000.

He kept hugging, caressing and kissing her for that sweet glorious song.

Philomelo sang for Tereus as beautiful as a nightingale. He was bewitched by her voice. It made him tremble. And it made his desire greater than he could bear. Even though he was married to Procne, Philomela’s sister, he took her to be his wife too. This was followed by awful consequences. Finally Procne murdered her son, Itylus, in a blind fury. And served him as meal to Tereus.
