These flower series began in 1999 after a visit to an exhibition of Dutch still lifes at the Rijksmuseum. During the pandemic, a turbulent period of intense reflection and writing unfolded. Writing, painting, and sketching on proofs gradually led to a complete new way of working. These old prints and proofs wanted to come out of the archives and stock room. Dutch Golden Age flower paintings, linked with patriarchal colonial system needs call for a new narrative.

Writing, painting, and drawing throwing often with special white and lightcoloured ink. Photography means “writing with light” in Greek. I want to bring stories to light and spread light. I need a lot of courage. You can help me buying these works and my books. Thank you in advance. Margriet Smulders
